Police refute abduction of students in Nasarawa

Nasarawa State Police Command has rejected reports alleging that students of St. Peter’s Foundation Secondary School in Rukubi, Doma Local Government Area, were kidnapped on Friday.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, the command described the viral social media and media reports as “false” and not representative of what transpired.

According to the police, the panic began when students heading to the school field for their Physical and Health Education class encountered armed hunters in the area and ran, believing they were kidnappers. Their teachers later guided them back to safety within the school compound.

Nansel said the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, promptly dispatched a joint team of police officers and military personnel stationed nearby after receiving the distress alert.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the pupils had sighted some hunters carrying Dane guns and, out of fear, fled, mistaking them for kidnappers. The area was thoroughly combed, and normalcy was immediately restored,” the statement said.

The school proprietor was interviewed and confirmed that no kidnapping occurred, describing the alarm as unfounded. Security personnel have since maintained heightened patrols in the area to forestall any genuine threat.

The command urged members of the public to ignore the misleading reports and cautioned journalists to verify information before publishing to avoid fuelling unnecessary fear.

“The report is mere rumour unworthy of publication as factual news,” the statement added.
