Police pledge not to cover up for officers, counsel public not to resort to self-help

Police in Lagos have pledged that no officer of the force will be covered up for breaking the law or for any wrongdoing – a pledge that coincides with the run up to the nationwide protest planned for April 7 over economic hardship and diminishing democracy.

Lagos Police Command gave the assurance after a viral video recorded at Omole Estate in the Ikeja axis shows security personnel blocking uniformed police officers from entering the estate.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the officers involved in the incident were not from the state police command but were part of a police escort and protection detail from outside Lagos.

However, he stressed, obstruction of law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties is illegal and will not be tolerated, warning that such acts of interference are punishable under the law and those who obstruct police officers could face legal consequences.

Hundeyin also claimed that Lagos Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh is disappointed that the management of Omole estate chose to share the incident on social media to cast aspersions in the minds of the public rather than reporting it to the relevant authorities.

“We urge the Omole estate management and residents to report every incident of concern to the police and also follow up on proper investigation of such incidents and the actions taken against such officers instead of resorting to self-help,” Hundeyin said.
