Police investigating abduction of Olatunji 5 days after incident

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

Police have begun investigation into the abduction for FirstNews Editor Segun Olatunji, whom soldiers grabbed and took away from his Lagos home on March 15 without disclosing his offence or his whereabouts.

Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the investigation on Tuesday in Abuja when responding to enquiries on what the police are doing to secure the release of the journalist.

Adejobi said the police will not relent in getting to the root of the matter and also ensure Olatunji is freed and reunited with his family.

He added the police will reach out to the army to ascertain if Olatunji is in their custody since there are reports in the media he was arrested by soldiers.

Publisher of FirstNews Publisher Daniel Iworiso-Markson commended the police, saying, “we are beginning to see some action being taken to unravel the whereabouts of Segun Olatunji five days after he was forcefully taken away from his home.

“It was expected that this action should have been taken long before now, but nonetheless, we are glad about the decision of the police to take up the matter.

”We are all worried, and it’s really disheartening that five days after this incident was reported, no action has been taken by the authorities until now. We have been running from pillar to post seeking help for the release of our Editor.

“The family is really traumatised by it all, and with the passing of each day with no sign of Segun’s whereabouts, it’s like we are all hanging by a thread. We really hope the police will find and bring him back safely to his family.”
