Petrol tanker tumbles at Otedola Bridge, Lagos, causes multiple car crash

Petrol tanker accidents are fast becoming a troubling occurrence, at the notorious Otedola Bridge in the Berger axis of Lagos State

A 45,000 Litre capacity petrol tanker has fallen over at the Otedola Bridge in the Berger axis of Lagos State, resulting in a multiple car crash.

The trend is fast becoming a troubling one, as such tanker related accidents have now become a norm on the notorious bridge.  

However, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the accident in a statement on Friday morning, allayed apprehension that greeted the accident across Lagos.

He went on to state that the accident has been brought under control by a combined team of his men, Lagos State Fire Service, and Nigeria Police. 

The senior civil servant also cautioned members of the public against illegal scooping of product to avoid any additional outbreak and igniting naked flame or fire.

The statement reads; “Upon arrival of the Agency’s tiger team at the incident scene, it was observed that a multiple accident involving a tanker with unknown registration number conveying about 45 thousand litres of petrol and 4 vehicles had occurred.

“A joint team of Lagos State Fire Service, Agency fire team, and Nigeria Police worked to manage the flames and the resultant traffic backlogs using chemical foam.

“The other affected cars were recovered by the Agency’s light duty equipment.

“The entire area has been blanketed with chemical retardant to prevent secondary incidents. Members of the public are to refrain from illegal scooping of product to prevent any additional outbreak and to avoid igniting naked flame or fire.

“The operation has been concluded and the carriageway is open for traffic”
