Peter Obi gave me his word he would do only one term – Aisha Yesufu

Rights activist Aisha Yesufu has disclosed that Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) had confided in her even before the 2023 vote that he would serve one term if elected President but the North is now edgy about it, thinking that could mean giving the South a new eight years if Bola Tinubu is sacked in 2027 and Obi wins the ballot.
Yesufu recounted on X on Sunday how her conversations with Obi show his consistent commitment to serving one term as President if the election is not rigged and he is voted into office.
She reiterated that the former Anambra Governor had maintained the stance even before he ran for President in 2023, using the template set by Nelson Mandela, who became South African President after spending 27 years in jail but refused to serve a second term in office even as people clamoured for him to do so.
“I, Aisha Yesufu, can confirm that Mr Peter Gregory Obi has always said he would do just a term even before the 2023 election,” she recounted.
“I used to argue with him that one term is not enough and he can’t just refuse to contest.
“In fact, I told him on several occasions while we were campaigning in 2022 that the people will not allow him to do just a term. He would use Nelson Mandela as example. He would explain that if one was ready to really work that a term was more than enough!
“Early this year, I went back to him to ask if he truly meant what he said about doing just a term.
“Many from the north had shown concern over support for Peter Obi might lead to an extra 4 years for the south.
“I told him that I was going to speak of his promise to do one term only publicly and I needed his confirmation on doing a term as my integrity mattered to me and I wouldn’t want to say something and it turns out not to be so.
“Mr Peter Obi once again gave me his word that he was going to do only one term.”
