PDP alleges Binani using Yunusa-Ari’s case to shield herself from indictment in attempted civilian coup

Adamawa governorship candidate Aishatu Ahmed, popularly called Binani, is trying to shield herself from indictment by seeking to stop the prosecution of former state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged.

Yunusa-Ari unlawfully declared her Governor-elect in March while collation of results had yet to be completed. The declaration was rejected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which suspended him and later charged him to court.

Binani, a former Senator, is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Based on her lawsuit, an Abuja Federal High Court on Monday gave an order stopping the prosecution of Yunusa-Ari until the election tribunal decides the petition Binani filed over the rejection of her declaration by the INEC.

In his reaction, Adamawa PDP Secretary Idris Yahya accused Binani of trying to protect herself when he addressed journalists in Yola and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter.

Yahya said long before the ignoble role of Yunusa-Ari who failed in his bid to ensure she emerged Governor by hook or crook, the PDP had complained repeatedly about Binani and her desperation, but neither the APC nor the INEC showed any concern about it.

In his view, the latest attempt by Binani to stop the prosecution of Yunusa-Ari only confirmed her as the “chief executioner and principal actor” in the civilian coup Yunusa-Ari attempted.

“Binani by this action has shown herself to be the chief executioner and principal actor in the attempted civilian coup orchestrated by the suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner, Yunusa Ari-Hudu, who usurped the returning officer and illegally declared her winner of Adamawa governorship elections even when results for the supplementary governorship polls were still being collated.

“Her intention is to protect Hudu because she knows what she has done. Because with the prosecution of Hudu, she knows she will be indicted.”

Binani yet to be prosecuted for the fiasco

Yahya lamented Binani has yet to face prosecution for her own role in the saga, per reporting by The PUNCH.

“Binani I believe has not faced prosecution because of the invisible hands behind her, otherwise she ought to be prosecuted for aiding and abetting Hudu’s illegal declaration of her as the winner of the Adamawa governorship election.

“You were part of a treasonable plot and now you are going back asking your lawyer to stop the prosecution of the suspended REC who the police by its investigations said it has established a prima facie case against him.”

Yahya explained his appeal to Tinubu to intervene is to resist Binani’s push to stop the prosecution of her close ally in the failed civilian coup she attempted in Adamawa.
