Ozil announces retirement from football

Ozil amassed over 500 career appearances during his 17-year career at Schalke, Werder Bremen, Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe and Basaksehir

Former Germany international and ex-Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old said he took the decision to quit the round leather game because of the number of injuries he has suffered in recent times.

Ozil who moved to Turkey after his time at north London club, Arsenal has spent the past three years of his footballing career in the Turkish Super Lig.

He finally hung his boots after making just four appearances for his current club, Basaksehir.

He amassed over 500 career appearances during his 17-year career at Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe and Basaksehir. 

Ozil twitted; “After thoughtful consideration, I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.

He added: “It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions.

“I want to thank my clubs – Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe, Basaksehir and the coaches who supported me, plus teammates who have become friends.”

Prior to this development, former Togo and Arsenal striker, Emmanuel Adebayor told his fans and the footballing world that he has decided to hang his soccer boots at the age of 39.

He enjoyed a 22-year professional career, which saw him play in France, England, Spain, Turkey, Paraguay and his native Togo.

Announcing his retirement from football, the Togolese took to his official Instagram page to thank his fans for their support throughout his career.

Adebayor wrote: “SEA, from the highs to the lows, my career as a professional athlete has been an incredible journey.

“Thank you to my fans for being there every step of the way. I’m feeling so grateful for everything, and excited for what’s to come!”
