Owena Dam as a game changer: Hope rises for water security and economic renewal in Ondo
By Julius Alabi, Akure
In what experts describe as a transformational leap for water security and rural development, the long neglected Owena Dam is set to redefine the future of potable water supply and economic activity across Ondo State.
Once rehabilitation works are completed, the dam is projected to deliver an impressive 300 million liters of potable water daily, a figure that water sector analysts say could fundamentally reshape access to clean water for hundreds of thousands of residents.
Speaking on the dam’s potential, water infrastructure advocate, the Commissioner for Water Resources and Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon Ayodele Akande noted that the renewed facility would mark “a huge boost to the state’s water capacity,” ending decades of irregular supply and leaving behind the era when many households relied on unsafe water sources.
Communities that have battled chronic scarcity from Akure to the surrounding towns may finally witness a new dawn.
But the promise of Owena Dam extends far beyond household taps. Government officials and project engineers view the rehabilitation as a multi-purpose investment capable of unlocking several layers of economic value.
In addition to potable water production, the dam is expected to support irrigation for farming communities, enabling year-round agriculture and improving food security. There is also cautious optimism that the facility could, in the long term, host small scale power generation, offering clean and steady energy to nearby settlements and agro-processing hubs.
Development experts say such multi-dimensional infrastructure is exactly what the state needs. By providing water for agriculture, supporting small industries, and reducing the public health risks associated with unsafe water sources, the dam could swiftly become one of the state’s most important assets.
Yet, stakeholders caution that the full benefits will only materialize if the rehabilitation is followed by sustained maintenance, transparent management, and protection of the surrounding environment.
For now, though, the promise is unmistakable. With its vast capacity and economic potential, the Owena Dam is being positioned not merely as a water project but as a game changer, a catalyst for healthier communities, stronger livelihoods, and a more resilient future for Ondo State.
