In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria, Comrade Oshiomhole said “The death of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa came to me as a rude shock. Unarguably one of the best legal icons to have come from this part of the world, Justice Oputa was a shining example of the best of the Judiciary; an incorruptible judge who gave faultless judgments which have become reference points in the country’s jurisprudence.

As Chairman of the Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission, now popularly known as the “Oputa Panel”, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa displayed extreme patience, resilience, fairness and the wisdom required to handle such an important national assignment to the admiration of all.’

“He distinguished himself in all areas of professional, social and family life and stood tall among his peers for his intellectual prowess and high sense of integrity. He was always on the side of justice and equity.

“His death is more painful at this time that the nation requires the wisdom of men of high stature like him to help navigate the country through her difficult moments.

However, while we mourn the loss of such a great mind, we also celebrate his many accomplishments. His philosophical judgments for which he will forever be remembered have served as a reference point in the nation’s legal system.

On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I commiserate with the Government and people of Imo state; the Nigerian Bar and Bench on this sad loss.

“I pray God to grant the soul of the late Justice Oputa peaceful rest and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
