Ondo’s ex-military Gov, Gen Opaleye is dead

Opaleye served as the Gov of Ondo State during the regime of Gen Babangida from August 1986 to December 1987

The former Military Governor of Old Ondo State, General Ekundayo Babakayode Opaleye (rtd), has passed away.

TheNiche gathered that he died at his Ibara Government Reservation Area residence in Abeokuta on Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack.

Opaleye was the military governor of Ondo State during the regime of Military President, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and served from August 1986 to December 1987.

He took over from the late Admiral Mike Akhigbe before handing over to Commodore Olabode George.

Until his death, the retired military officer was the Balogun Erunmu of Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking on his death, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described him as a patriotic military officer, who was dedicated to his duties.

He went on to say his demise was a great loss to the state and Nigeria as a whole.

“Major General Opaleye’s contribution to our nation, particularly during his tenure as the military governor, will always be remembered. His dedication and service to the people of old Ondo State will forever be cherished. His sudden demise is a great loss to the entire country.

We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family, offering our support and prayers as they navigate through this painful period. May they find strength and solace in the memories shared with Major General Opaleye. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the governor said.
