Onanuga berates Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer for joining Sowore-led protest

By Jeffrey Agbo

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga has taken a swipe at one of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal representatives, Aloy Ejimakor, for participating in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest spearheaded by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Onanuga, who serves as Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, voiced his disapproval in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, describing Ejimakor’s decision as disappointing and misguided.

He wrote, “I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest.”

The presidential aide argued that Ejimakor, being a lawyer actively involved in Kanu’s ongoing treason trial, should understand that taking part in public demonstrations on a case still before the court breaches the sub judice rule.

He added, *“As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court. The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr. Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu.

“Rather than focusing on preparing a strong case, Mr. Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics, joining a career anarchist to influence the process.”

Onanuga further called on relevant legal bodies to take disciplinary measures against Ejimakor, labelling his conduct as a breach of professional ethics.

He added, “Ejimakor’s action questions his adherence to professional ethics. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for the unethical conduct of the bearded lawyer.”

The #FreeNnamdiKanu rally, convened by Sowore, started around 7 a.m. near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja before security personnel dispersed the crowd with tear gas, affecting Sowore and several protesters.
