Former Nigerian international and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed his admiration for Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, despite the Malian tactician failing to lead Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Oliseh made his feelings about the coach known while featuring as a guest on a podcast show.

Chelle failed to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated the Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties in the CAF playoff final.

Speaking on Chelle’s performance so far on the show, Oliseh threw his weight behind the gaffer.

He argued that, despite the criticism trailing his team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, Chelle performed better than two of his predecessors.

“I am one of those who, in reality, was totally unhappy when he was appointed, but I must be honest with you that so far, he has won me over,” the former midfielder said during the interview.

He added, “I feel like the man has really given it a lot, he’s done a lot, and he’s picked up some points, better than any of the two people that preceded him.”

Chelle will lead the Super Eagles to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.
