Okpanam Association North America mourns Obi Martha Dunkwu

Obi Martha wore three caps: She was crowned Omu of Okpanam on January 26, 2002, Omu Anioma on January 15, 2010, and Nneoha (mother of all) on October 19, 2020.

In the wake of the death of the Omu of Okpanam, Obi Martha Dunkwu, a non-governmental organisation, the Okpanam Association North America, has extended its condolences to the family, friends, and the entire community of Okpanam.

The Omu died on February 17, 2024 at Asaba Specialist Hospital.

Born and raised in Okpanam, Delta State, Dunkwu’s journey was one of remarkable dedication and unparalleled achievements. From her humble beginnings at St. Joseph’s Catholic School to her illustrious career in public service, her life story resonated deeply with many, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration.

In a statement made available to TheNiche on Sunday, the Okpanam Association North America said, “As a trailblazer in community development, women’s empowerment, and cultural preservation, Dunkwu’s coronation as Omu of Okpanam in 2002 marked a pivotal moment in her legacy. Her unwavering commitment to uplifting her community and advocating for the rights of women garnered widespread admiration and respect.

“Internationally acclaimed for her intellectual prowess and exemplary achievements, Dunkwu’s inclusion in the ‘2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century’ and receipt of the ‘21st Century Award for Achievement’ underscored her global influence and relevance. Her dedication to social causes, particularly girl-child education and women’s empowerment, left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals, resonating with the Okpanam Association North America and beyond.”
