Okocha backs compatriot, Osimhen to win CAF Player of the Year

Okocha argued that Osimhen deserved the award because he was the most consistent African player last season

Football pundit and former Super Eagles  midfielder, Augustine Azuka Okocha aka
Jay Jay Okocha, has backed his compatriot, Victor Osimhen to win the CAF Player of the Year.

This year’s winner of the prize will be announced at an event on December 11 in Morocco.

Osimhen is considered one of the favourites to win the prestigious individual award after his exploits last season.  

The Nigerian international will be up against players like Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, PSG defender, Achraf Hakimi and former Manchester City winger, Riyad Mahrez.

Speaking during a Bundesliga media round table, Okocha argued that Osimhen deserves to win the award because he was consistent last season.

He said: “He [Osimhen] deserves it because for me, he was the most consistent player of last season. He deserves it.”

Osimhen led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season, scoring 26 goals along the way. 

Meanwhile, the Napoli striker was named the Italian Footballers’ Association Footballer of the Year for his stellar showing with Neopolitans last season on Monday night.  

During the award ceremony, accolades were also given to team of the year, coach of the year, club of the year, and goal of the season.
