Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, has not been elected Chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers (SECTR), the palace said on Tuesday.

A statement by the Obi’s chief of staff, Chief Osita Anionwu, said it became necessary to correct the erroneous impression arising from a trending video clip made at the town hall meeting of the Onitsha indigenous community last Thursday, February 27, 2025.

“The written commentary trending with the tape wrongly asserts that His Majesty, Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, mni, Obi of Onitsha (Agbogidi), has been elected Chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers (SECTR),” the statement said.

“It is noted that the chairmanship and other offices of the SECTR automatically rotate alphabetically every two years among the five States of the South East.

“Imo State currently holds the Chairmanship in the person of His Majesty, Eze Dr. E. C. Okeke, CFR, Ezeude Il of Amaifeke, Chairman of Imo State Traditional Rulers Council (Eze Imo), who, with the unanimous support of the Executive Committee, is wholly responsible for the affairs of the SECTR.

“At its delegates’ meeting in May 2023, the SECTR designated Obi of Onitsha as the leader of the traditional institution of the South East, reiterating its decision of two years earlier. No executive roles are attached to this designation.”

The statement said the Obi of Onitsha was overwhelmed by the numerous congratulatory messages sent to him despite being undeserved. “Nevertheless, he wishes everyone well,” it added.
