The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has frowned at the worsening security situation in the country, noting that schoolchildren who were abducted in Borno and Oyo states by terrorists are still in captivity.

He expressed concern over the developments on Tuesday in a lengthy post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the students and teachers are yet to regain their freedom two weeks after their abduction, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to rescue them.

He also lamented the killing of at least seven persons and the injury of 10 others in Gwon-Ajang village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, as well as the reported abduction of more than 25 persons and the killing of a resident during an attack on the Ayegunle-Igun community in Kogi State.

He further condemned the killing of two police officers in Anambra State and recalled the abduction of dozens of pupils, students, and teachers from schools in Oyo and Borno states on May 15.

Obi continued, “Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens.”

He added, “In a nation that is not at war, the ongoing insecurity that endangers schoolchildren signifies a profound and serious challenge.”
