Obi disowns letter written to Obi of Onitsha over Anambra politics
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi has disowned a letter alleged to have been written by him to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, over political and financial matters in Anambra State.
The said letter, titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak” and dated September 19, 2026, berated Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s claim of liabilities of Anambra incurred during Obi’s tenure as governor.
“Let the records be opened. Let the books be examined. Let every legitimate question be answered with evidence,” the said letter read.
Obi had challenged the claims of “unpaid loans” by the Anambra State Government on his record while in office, insisting he owed no one in pensions, salaries or contract jobs done.
He also said that if there is proof, he will stop campaigning.
Anambra State Government on Wednesday said that Obi’s administration left unpaid loans from eight different external borrowings as of the time he left office on March 17, 2014, adding that as of June 30, 2026, the total balance of such loans left by Obi at the official exchange rate stood at N127.4 billion.
However, reacting to the viral letter, Obi said in a post on X on Saturday that the document was fabricated.
“My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,” Obi wrote.
“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged.
“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”
