Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the recent technical glitches that marred the release of results by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), affecting nearly 380,000 candidates.

In a statement titled “When Glitches Become a National Crisis,” Obi praised JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, for his rare show of accountability in admitting the error and expressing remorse. He described the gesture as “commendable,” but insisted it highlighted a deeper issue – the fragility of Nigeria’s institutional systems.

Obi warned that the emotional and psychological toll on affected students, including reports of severe trauma and even death, underlined the critical need for reliability and integrity in public examination processes. “Such failures are not minor mishaps. They shake the very foundations of trust in our public institutions,” he said.

He called on JAMB and similar bodies to adopt rigorous quality assurance frameworks, including continuous auditing of technical infrastructure, transparent communication, and rapid issue resolution. According to him, “There must be no room for further glitches – not in JAMB, not in any arm of government. The cost of repeated failure is simply too high.”

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had in a press conference on Wednesday, admitted technical errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) and offered profound apologies for the lapses. Part of the remedies was a re-sit of the examination by affected candidates.

Oloyeded said candidates expected to re-sit the test will begin getting text messages from today (Thursday). He made the disclosure at the Abuja press briefing.

According to Oloyede, at least 379,997 candidates in five states of the South East and Lagos were expected to participate in the re-sit.  “206,610 in 65 centres were affected in Lagos and 92 centres in Owerri zone comprising of 173,387 candidates in the five states of the South East were affected,” he said.

The JAMB boss also took responsibility for what he claimed was a sabotage of the 2025 UTME. “I apologise, I take full responsibility,” Oloyede added.

Out of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for the examinations, over 1.5 million scored below 200 out of the maximum 400 marks.
