The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.
His death was officially announced in a statement issued by his younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, on behalf of the family.
According to the statement, Professor Oyeweso passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, following a brief illness.
Confirming his demise, Olalekan Badmus, Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Digital Media, shared a post on X, describing the death as a shocking and painful loss to both the academic and political communities in Osun State.

Writing via his verified handle, he stated, “Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso. An illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss!”
A renowned Professor of History, educator, and mentor, Prof. Oyeweso was widely respected for his contributions to education and his significant involvement in state politics, notably within the All Progressives Congress (APC). His academic work and public engagements garnered respect across Osun State, Nigeria, and internationally.
He is survived by his wife, children, and family members.
His remains will be interred in his country home, Ede, today at 4:00 PM after solat Ashri.
