NSCDC nabs student over attempt to kidnap college provost

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger Command, has arrested an 18-year-old student, over alleged attempt to kidnap the Provost of the Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, New Bussa.

Spokesman of the Minna NSCDC Command Nasir Abdullahi said in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect, who is a student of the college, was arrested on August 10.

He said that the suspect allegedly conspired with one other person, now at large, to write a letter threatening to kidnap the provost if he failed to pay ransom.

The Niger NSCDC spokesman, however, said that the suspect did not demand any particular amount from the provost before his arrest.

Abdullahi said the suspect has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates Court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and intimidation.

Dr. B.D. Olaosebikan is the Provost of the Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) located at New- Bussa, headquarters of Borgu Local Government.

The College started in January 1978 as the Federal Freshwater Fisheries School under the aegis of Kainji Lake Research Institute (KLRI) and was initially located at a temporary site in Shagunu. FCFFT, New-Bussa became self-accounting from January 1989.

The College says it admits students yearly based on community relevance.
