Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to being held to a 1-1 draw by African representatives DR Congo in their 2026 World Cup opener on Wednesday, promising that the team will improve.
He lamented the outcome of the fixture in a post shared on social media after the encounter.
During the match, Ronaldo failed to add to his international goal tally as his side dropped points against the Leopards.
The 41-year-old managed only two scuffed efforts during the 90 minutes he played at the Houston Stadium.
Joao Neves put Portugal ahead as early as the 6th minute, but DR Congo restored parity before half-time through Yoane Wissa.
Both teams were unable to break down each other’s defence in the second half and ultimately settled for a score draw.
Reflecting on the match via his verified account, Ronaldo admitted that the result was not the outcome they had anticipated.
However, he added that he and his teammates will now shift their attention to their next group game against Uzbekistan next Tuesday.
He wrote: “It’s not the start we wanted but this is FAR from being over. Focus on the next game.”
