Northern youths urge Tinubu not to emulate Buhari, Nigeria’s worst President

Some Northern youths have urged Bola Tinubu not to engage in skewed appointments as done by his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled on the fulcrum of nepotism and turned out to be Nigeria’s worst leader by far.
Buhari gave nearly all security top posts to Northerners, especially Muslims. Tinubu has appointed mostly South Westerners as heads of most economic and revenue generating Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as other Southerners to lead key sectors and offices.
The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) conceded that Northerners have no right to complain about Tinubu’s “skewed” appointments and warned the country should not continue on that trajectory.
Some Northern leaders have criticised Tinubu for favouring the South in his key appointments, with Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi alleging Tinubu has appointed more Southern Christians into critical positions while ignoring Northerners who aided him in gaining power.
But NYLF National President Elliot Afiyo argued Tinubu is widening the gap of lopsided appointments inherited from Buhari.

He disclosed in Abeokuta that Buhari, from 2015 to 2023, created a skewed appointment gap of 80 per cent for the North and 20 per cent for the South, and counselled Tinubu not to follow that path “because the country must not continue in error.”
In his view, Nigerian leaders have since independence engaged in biased appointments, favouring their zones at the expense of others, per Daily Post.
Afiyo explained former President Olusegun Obasanjo tried to narrow the gap when he returned to power in 1999.
“But Buhari came in and created the gap to be 20/80. And even the Northerners that they were saying that Buhari appointed were not Northerners per se. We are now seeing that the appointments by Tinubu are tilting towards the South West.
“I would say Northerners don’t have the right to complain that the appointments or placements are lopsided. We don’t have the right to complain.
“But as advanced citizens, I ask: can we continue like this? Where are we going as a nation? So, there is a need for us to balance it.”
