No rift with Tinubu, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has denied reports suggesting a rift between him and President Bola Tinubu, calling the rumours unfounded and the product of outsiders “crying more than the bereaved.”
Speaking to journalists on Sunday after a private meeting with President Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu described the speculation as baseless. The closed-door meeting was attended by members of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the top political decision-making body in the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter.
For months, media reports have hinted at a growing strain in the relationship between the President and the governor, fueled by claims that Sanwo-Olu was sidelining key Tinubu loyalists to assert his own political influence. Sanwo-Olu, however, dismissed those reports, reaffirming his loyalty and describing Tinubu as both a mentor and father figure.

He explained that the visit was part of a long-standing tradition where GAC members pay Sallah homage to party elders during festive seasons.
“It’s our usual. You know, festive period courtesy visits and a time for Mr. President to meet with his brothers, leaders of our party… It’s something that they always look forward to,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He noted that the gathering also served as a platform to offer prayers, show solidarity, and reiterate the group’s collective support for the APC and its leadership. Sanwo-Olu praised President Tinubu’s efforts in national development, citing accomplishments such as the Blue Line rail project and recent federal actions to ease the burden of high fuel and food prices.
The governor’s remarks come amid efforts within the APC to strengthen internal unity and dispel rumours of division in the party’s Lagos stronghold.
Addressing planned protests ahead of June 12 Democracy Day, Sanwo-Olu questioned their basis, pointing to recent economic improvements.
“What will be the basis of the protest? The economy has made a positive turn. Give this President more time,” he said.
