National database

Nairametrics reports that government policy introduced in December 2020 mandating all mobile telephone subscribers to link their SIM with their NIN is helping to create a credible national database Nigeria has lacked for decades.

To address the infrastructure limitations of the NIMC, which slowed down NIN registration for years, several companies, including telecom operators, were licensed to act as enrolment agents.

The government directive in April made telecom operators bar outgoing calls from lines not linked, affecting about 75 million lines.

Ramp up by telcos

To reactivate blocked lines, telecom operators are wooing their customers with offers to encourage them to register and link their lines.

Globacom has a one-time ‘Glo NIN Offer’ that applies only to customers barred from making outgoing calls on the Glo network “as directed by regulatory authorities due to NIN non-compliance.”

Once subscribers link their NIN to their SIM they get a N20,000 bonus which can be used to call, browse, and text on the network.

Airtel urges affected subscribers to relink their lines and get N20,000 free airtime and data credit.
