Nigeria secures gold, bronze in women’s F55-57 shot put, qualifies  for male, female 4×100m relay finals

Nigeria currently occupies the 7th position in this year’s Commonwealth Games, with 8 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze, with more events yet to be decided

Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England put up another superlative performance, as they added another gold and bronze medal to the country’s medal haul in the F55-57 Shot Put event for women.

Eucharia Njideka Iyazi won the gold medal in the event after a throw of 10.03m, setting a new Games record in the process.

Arlette Fokoa of Cameroon won the silver medal with a throw of 9.38m while another Nigerian, Ugochi Constance Allan won the bronze medal having secured a 9.30m throw.

Meanwhile, the country’s male and female 4×100m relay teams also qualified for the final of the event which will take place tomorrow Sunday, August 7.   

They both booked their places in the final in impressive fashion on Saturday, August 6, winning their respective semi-finals.

Esther Isa and Temitope Adeshina who competed in the women’s High Jump final, were, however, not as lucky as they finished ninth and 10th respectively.

Both athletes jumped an identical height of 1.81m, which was not good enough for a podium finish.

Nigeria now occupies 7th place in the medal standings with 8 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze, with more events yet to be decided.
