NGO wants Gender Units established in Police Commands

Executive Director, Women Advocate, Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) has called for the establishment of Gender Based Units in all Police Command to end gender based violence across the country.

Akinyede made the call in Bauchi on Wednesday, June 10, while briefing newsmen on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill.

“The Nigeria Police should strengthen and revive gender units and also establish the same in states where there is none.

“Even if an officer is transferred, he or she continues the work against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) just like SARS operates nationwide,” she said.

While commending the Speaker and members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly for the commitment and passage of the second Reading of the bill, she said that the state was the first in the Northeast to take the giant stride.

Earlier, the WARDC officer in Bauchi, Mrs MaryAnne Emmanuel called on religious leaders to take over the podium and lead the fight against sexual and domestic violence.

She mentioned the state CSOs and NGOs working group on the VAPP to includes; Ikra Foundation for Women and Youths, SISWASHI women and children,Bauchi Network for Civil Society Organisations (BASNEC) ASHH Foundation among others.(NAN)
