Neville also suggested the narrow win is a boost for Arsenal, despite the Gunners being leapfrogged by Man City with five games remaining.

British pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has told Manchester City they must improve their performances if they want to lift this season’s Premier League trophy.

He offered the advice on Sky Sports on Wednesday night while analysing the midweek league fixture between City and Burnley.

On the night, Pep Guardiola’s side narrowly defeated the Clarets 1-0 at Turf Moor, despite creating several chances.

Erling Haaland scored the only goal in the sixth minute as City moved to the top of the Premier League table.

The Manchester outfit are, however, only ahead of Arsenal on goals scored.

Speaking after the crucial encounter, Neville said the outcome was the best result Mikel Arteta and his players could have hoped for under the circumstances.

“It’s a win for Manchester City. But it’s the best win Arsenal could have hoped for. One-nil,” he said.

“It’s all to play for. Arsenal have a home game against Newcastle on Saturday where they can reassert their three-point lead. It didn’t happen for Manchester City tonight [in terms of performance]. They will have to play better than that, or they will drop points.

“But Pep Guardiola knows he had to come away with three points. And he’s done that.”
