Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, has taken a swipe at his former club for bringing the Brazilian pair of Casemiro and Antony to Old Trafford during the summer transfer.

The Red Devils spent almost £150 million to bring in Casemiro from Real Madrid and Antony from Ajax, as the club owners, the Glazer family, aimed to return the Manchester club to its old glory.

However, speaking on The Overlap via Manchester Evening News, Neville criticised the Glazer family,

accusing them of spending more than necessary just to appease the fans and calling the move panic buying.

Neville said, “Manchester United wanted to spend about £130m-£140m, they ended up spending £230m.

“Obviously, we have seen it before with the Glazer family – loads of trouble, protests building, investing the money to try and appease the fans and panic-buy.”

He went on to describe the signing of the two Brazilians as a negation of the strategy earlier employed at the beginning of the transfer window.

“The Casemiro and Antony bids came in two days before the Liverpool game, which was obviously a moment where they just needed to get players in.

“It wasn’t the strategy at the start of the summer to spend the money they have spent,” he added.
