The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released its June-July Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination result.
It stated that of the 1, 151, 016 candidatesthat sat for the examination, 829, 787 scored five credits including Mathematics and English Language.
The examination body also explained that the figure of those with the five credits represents 71.59%.
The acting Registrar of the Council, Abubakar Gana, made the disclosure during a press briefing.
He said that 984,152 candidates representing 85.50% scored Credit and above in English Language, 954,399 representing 83.03% scored Credit and above in Mathematics.
The acting registrar further said that a total of 40,630 candidates, representing 3.53%, involved in examination malpractices above that of 2018 that recorded 20,181 cases.
Gana attributed the reason for the higher figure of malpractice in 2019 to the use of the new Biometric verification device during the SSCE and a more robust monitoring by staff and external monitors.
According to him, three schools, one each in Katsina, Kebbi and Oyo states were recommended for de-recognition for two years for their involvement in mass cheating/ whole centres.
“Also, a total of 18 supervisors were blacklisted for various offences ranging from poor supervision, aiding and abetting, connivance with non-candidates to write answers on chalkboard and so on,” the acting registrar stated.
The comparative analysis, the NECO boss said of candidates’ performance in the examination with five credits and above including Mathematics and English Language for 2018 is 742,455 (71.48%) and 829, 787 for that of 2019, revealing a 0.11% increase in the general performance of students.
