Natasha warns that alleged assassination attempt on Obi, Odigie-Oyegun threatens national unity

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has strongly condemned  assassination attempt on former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, along with former Edo State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday during an event related to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including the formal declaration of a prominent figure in the party, Olumide Akpata.

In a statement issued via her social media platforms, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the development as “deeply disturbing” and one that “has no place in our democracy.”

She emphasized that politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against opponents.

“I am particularly concerned about overzealous political actors who, in a bid to impress or show loyalty to Mr. President or any other leader, take it upon themselves to harass or attack members of the opposition,” she stated. “Such actions are reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to our national unity.”

The senator highlighted the importance of democratic principles, noting that democracy thrives on healthy competition, free expression, and the protection of dissenting voices.

She affirmed that the opposition has a constitutional right to organize, mobilize, and engage in political activities without fear, warning that attempts to silence or endanger them undermine the foundation of Nigeria’s democratic system.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. “Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot… not through violence,” she added.
