Mr Taiwo Asaniyan, the Chief Meteorologist, Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), on Friday said this year’s rain pattern would be normal and enhance agricultural productivity.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that residents should expect cool atmosphere as the rain had started fully.
Asaniyan said that NiMET had predicted that the rain would start fully on April 25 and that people should expect more cool weather condition than humid.
“What we are experiencing is that the atmosphere is humid; we have a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, couple with the temperature.
“For now, the rain has started and the weather cuts across South-West.
“It started over the central states and moved down, affecting Ilorin, Ibadan, Abeokuta and Akure before reaching Lagos,’’ Asaniyan told NAN.
He said that there would be no excessive rainfall but normal rainfall pattern, which might not cause any harm or flooding.
On agriculture, the meteorologist expressed optimism that the rains would assist farmers to record bumper harvest, if their lands were ready.
“At this period, this is a good time for the farmers to begin planting between March and April as we are not going to experience any dry spell that will affect any crops now,’’ he said.
He said that the onset of the rain in 2015 was earlier, compared to 2014, which was due to the effect of climate change.
