The Reds scored the only goal of the match in the 27th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s volley was converted by Sadio Mane to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Salah drew two saves from Fabianski in his personal mission to score and then West Ham missed a gilt-edged chance to level.

Michail Antonio also had his shot well blocked by Naby Keita just outside the six-yard box, after Andy Robinson had initially slowed him down.

Mohamed Salah was replaced by Diego Jota in the 79th minute but he had no notable impact on the game, as West Ham continued to cause Liverpool problems.

James Milner was also introduced to replace Naby Keita for the last couple of minutes – an indication of how hard Liverpool were tested by The Hammers but they battled hard and held on to earn a crucial win.

The win takes The Reds within 3 points of league leaders, Man City who play their cross-town rivals, Man United in the second game on Sunday.

West Ham stay 5th despite the defeat and they will go into their mid-week Europa game against La Liga side,  Sevilla with confidence given their performance against Liverpool.
