Man gets death sentence for killing another man with multiple knife stabbings
A man named Usman Abdullahi has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of one Zaidu Dumi following an argument over a telephone charger.
Judge Sa’ad Sambuwal of a Bauchi High Court found Abdullahi guilty of grievous harm and culpable homicide which violate Sections 239 and 221 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution, led by Abubakar Kobi, a lawyer from the state Ministry of Justice, told the court that on 12 May 2021, the defendant had a disagreement with Dumi and his friend Ziya’u Abdulhadi over a phone charger, which led to him using a knife to stab the victim multiple times.
Dumi was taken to the Specialist Hospital Bauchi where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel, Kobi added.
The trial commenced on 30 December 2021, with the prosecution charging Abdullahi on two counts – causing grievous hurt and culpable homicide. The court heard that the victim was stabbed in the stomach, neck, and other parts of his body.
Defence counsel Naziru Umar presented two witnesses and pleaded for leniency on behalf of his client.
But the Judge ruled that “I hereby convict Usman Abdullahi for the offence of culpable homicide punishable by death. You shall be hanged by the neck until you die, in accordance with Section 221 of the Penal Code.
“For the offence of grievous hurt, you are sentenced to five years in correctional service, as stipulated under Section 239 of the Penal Code.”
