Makinde claims 2027 election is between ruling APC, Nigerians

Makinde also argued that PDP would’ve been stronger in 2023 had Atiku picked then Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike as his running mate.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has asserted that the 2027 presidential election will not be a contest between the All Progressives Congress (APC,) and major opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), but a referendum on the ruling party by  Nigerians.

He made this known on Tuesday while featuring on Channels Television programme, ‘Politics Today’.

“The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it would be Nigerians versus APC. Mark my word on that,” he said.

He went on to berate the APC government for the wobbling economy and the escalating security challenges in the country, adding that the next poll will be judgment time for the Bola Tinubu’s presidency.

The governor further said his party, the PDP, remained the hope of the common man, stressing that the party won’t repeat the mistake that made it lose the 2023 presidential poll.

Makinde, while drawing lessons from the last poll, noted that PDP bungled the process when it handed the presidential ticket, the national chairman slot and the office of the director general of the presidential campaign to members from the northern region only.

He reiterated that the exclusion of southerners from the three major slots dealt a self-inflicted blow and culminated in the loss suffered by the party in the poll.

“If the three main influential positions to take us to the election were occupied by the North East, the North Central, and the North West, how do we sell that position all around the country,” Makinde argued.

He also argued that the PDP would have been more formidable had Atiku picked then Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike as his running mate.

In the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, Iyorchia Ayu from the North Central was the PDP national chairman, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the North East was the party’s flag bearer, while Aminu Tambuwal from the North West was Atiku’s campaign director general.
