Maiduguri tragedy shows Nigeria unprotected under Tinubu govt, says Adebayo

By Henry Nnaemeka

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election, Adewole Adebayo, has criticised Nigeria’s leadership following the deadly explosions in Maiduguri, accusing the government of failing to protect citizens at a critical moment.

In a statement shared via his official X handle, Adebayo described the incident as a stark failure of governance, lamenting the devastation in the northeastern city and the human toll on affected families.

According to him, innocent Nigerians have been left to “recount horror” as lives are lost and communities plunged into grief.

He argued that the federal government has fallen short of its most fundamental responsibility—ensuring the safety and security of its people. He noted that the Defence Minister was appointed with a clear mandate to safeguard the nation, yet many Nigerians remain unconvinced about the effectiveness of that responsibility.

Adebayo also faulted the absence of key national figures, pointing out that Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, are currently in London on official engagements.

He described their presence abroad amid the unfolding tragedy as a troubling disconnect from realities on the ground.

“This is not just a disconnect. It is a failure of leadership,” he said, stressing that the primary duty of any government is the protection of lives.

Adebayo called on the country’s leadership to return, take responsibility, and urgently address the deteriorating security situation, warning that Nigeria is “suffering” under the current conditions.
