Legal action has commenced to rescue a teenage girl in Gombe who was married off to an unknown wealthy man as his fourth wife in Taraba, according to Gombe Women Affairs and Social Development Commissioner, Asma’u Iganus.
Iganus said the 14-year-old was forced to marry the man as his fourth wife without the child’s consent or much information about his background and source of wealth.
“This is a gross abuse of her fundamental rights, and we will not tolerate it. Legal action is already underway to secure her [the girl’s] freedom and hold the perpetrators accountable,” she pledged.
Marilyn Na’omi, a lawyer from the state Ministry of Justice vowed that the government would not let the case go without consequences.
“No child should face such a violation,” Na’omi said.
