Lagos shuts school over toddler’s drowning in swimming pool

Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School, located on Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, following the tragic death of a toddler in the school’s swimming pool.
In a statement released on Saturday, Kayode Sutton, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed that the school was shut on Friday to allow for preliminary investigations into the incident involving the two-year-old female pupil.

The government expressed deep sorrow over the child’s death and extended condolences to her family.
Sutton further disclosed that the school proprietor, the head of the nursery section, the pupil’s teacher, the pool instructor, and two caregivers are currently being interrogated by the police.
Lagos State Government urged all school owners and caregivers to strictly adhere to safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in schools and ensure the safety of children across the state.
