Lagos registers 6.94m voters, tops states in PVCs

Lagos registers 6.94m, Kano 5.83m, Kaduna 4.23m

Lagos is edging again to be the dominant power broker in 2023 after retaining its lead over Kano by 1.10 million registrations to coast home with 6.94 million Permanent Voter Card (PVC) holders in Continuous Voters Registration (CVR).

Nigeria’s most populous and cosmopolitan state also led the pack in the number of registered voters for the 2019 ballot.

The latest CVR update by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows 10.48 million new registrations and 8.63 million completed registrations as of 27 June.

That means about nine million new eligible voters have been added to the voter database which was 84 million in 2019.

Growing civic duty awareness among youths is driving the surge for PVCs as those aged 18-30 form 70 per cent with six million out of total 8.6 million registration.

The figure is bound to rise with the extension of registration by 60 days from 30 June.

Below are the top 10 states of PVC holders based on 2019 figures and new registrations as of 27 June 2022, according to INEC data.

Lagos – 6,942,051

Lagos at 6.57 million had the largest number of registered voters of any state for the 2019 elections.

It has garnered 371,760 new registrations so far, bringing its total to 6.94 million, also the highest in 2022.

Kano – 5,838,329

Kano was second in 2019 and retains the slot with 380,582 new PVC registrations.

Its 5.45 million voters three years ago have grown to 5.83 million so far.

Kaduna – 4,239,441

Despite huge mobilisation nationwide for states to raise their PVC stakes, the top three in 2019 – Lagos, Kano, Kaduna – have clung to their positions and beefed them up with new registrations.

Kaduna retained its number three slot with  306,949 new registrations, bring  its total to 4.2 million, up from 3.93 million in 2019, according to INEC figures, per Nairametrics reporting.

Rivers – 3,587,679

Rivers had 3.21 million PVC holders in 2019, the highest in the South South.

It has added 372,406 and raised its total to 3.58 million.

Katsina – 3,444,064

Katsina recorded 3.2 million registered voters in 2019 and has reinforced its political consciousness in the North West with 213,834 new registrations.

That brings its total to 3.44 million.

Delta – 3,242,174

Delta has the largest number of new PVC holders with 396,900.

It total is 3.24 million, up from 2.84 million in 2019.

Oyo – 3,216,061

Oyo had 2.93 million registered voters in 2019.

It has added 281,954 to bring its total to 3.21 million.

Benue – 2,717,673

Benue has shored up its 2.4 million registered voters in 2019 with 237,542 new registrations to raise its figure to 2.7 million.

Bauchi – 2,711,985

Bauchi racked up 249,142 new registrations to lifts its voter base to 2.7 million from  2.46 million in 2019.

Anambra – 2,651,152

Anambra has 203,156 new registrations that grows it numbers to 2.65 million, above  2.44 million in 2019.
