Lagos police to probe Simi over resurfaced tweets – DSVA
By Ishaya Ibrahim
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, has disclosed that the controversy surrounding resurfaced tweets by singer Simisola Kosoko (Simi) has been referred to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation.
Trouble brewed for the singer after netizens flagged several old posts that appeared inappropriate in relation to children. In one tweet, she reportedly described a four-year-old child as having a crush on her and “acting like he wants loc lip”. In another, she allegedly wrote that the same child was “trying to put hand inside my shet (sic)”.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Thursday, Vivour-Adeniyi stated: “We [Lagos State DSVA] have referred the case to the commissioner of police to conduct some preliminary investigations.”
She noted, however, that the case would be difficult to prosecute without a survivor coming forward.
“It is going to be very difficult to prosecute Simi without a survivor being present. To start the process, we encourage anybody who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Simi to please come forward and ensure that their statement is taken.”
In addition to the Lagos police investigation initiated at the DSVA’s prompting, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has expressed interest in probing the matter. The agency has urged victims or witnesses to come forward with credible information.
