A Lagos State Government regulatory body, the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has launched an investigation into the death of a socialite known as “Elena”, who allegedly died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a clinic in the state.

The probe was confirmed on Thursday via a statement issued by HEFAMAA’s Permanent Secretary, Abiola Idowu, after reports of the incident circulated on social media.

According to these online reports, Elena experienced complications during or shortly after the cosmetic surgery.

Reacting to the news of her death, Idowu stated that a comprehensive and transparent review of what transpired has already begun in an attempt to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA. However, the agency head stressed that registration does not shield any facility from regulatory oversight, particularly when concerns regarding patient safety arise.

“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing, and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all health facilities adhere to established operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols,” Idowu said.

She further explained that aesthetic and cosmetic procedures in the state are strictly governed by defined regulatory standards. These include requirements related to facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control, patient consent, anaesthetic safety, and emergency preparedness.

The Permanent Secretary added that the agency is conducting a detailed review of the case, including the verification of the medical credentials of the personnel involved and an assessment of the quality of care provided before, during, and after the surgery.

“The government remains firmly committed to protecting the health and safety of all residents through enhanced regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare facilities, and strict enforcement of standards across the state,” she said.

The agency also called on the public to exercise restraint and avoid spreading unverified information that could compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
