Lagos cyclist killed in truck collision

By Jeffrey Agbo

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a cyclist following a collision with a heavily loaded truck (registration number BDG 610 YA) at the Alausa bus stop in Lagos.

In a statement shared via its X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, revealed that preliminary investigations show the cyclist was attempting to maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way when he collided with the moving truck.

“In the process, he tragically lost control, struck his head violently against the pavement, and succumbed to fatal injuries instantaneously,” Taofiq stated.

Eyewitness reports suggest that the cyclist was using an earpiece and engaged in a phone conversation at the time of the incident, leading to a fatal lapse in concentration on the busy expressway.

LASTMA operatives quickly arrived at the scene, securing the area to ensure the safety of other road users and to maintain a smooth traffic flow. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were also immediately notified and responded to the situation.

While managing the traffic around the accident site, LASTMA officials handed over the remains of the deceased to the police, who then transferred the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.

Expressing his condolences, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stressed the importance of adhering strictly to road safety protocols. He particularly urged cyclists to always wear appropriate protective gear and avoid all forms of distractions, including contesting the right of way with motorised vehicles.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time.

“We earnestly urge all cyclists to prioritise their personal safety and that of fellow road users by remaining fully alert and suitably equipped at all times while traversing public roads,” he said.
