Surulere Council has pledged to make restitution for the unlawful demolition of Deeper Life Bible Church branch at 33 Aina Street, Lawanson, Lagos, and to consult with authorities and provide an update this week.
Council Chairman Bamidele Yusuf made the promise at a meeting with representatives of the church, led by Alfred Ogene, Group Pastor, and Tayo Okufolati, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The meeting addressed the council’s defiance of a court order concerning a lawfully acquired property with full documentation.
Bashiru Adesina, the Pastor who oversees the Yoruba Church at the branch, expressed outrage over the overnight demolition of the 18-year-old branch without prior notice, resulting in significant vandalism of church property.
The council reportedly began laying foundation for shops on the site immediately after the demolition, which prompted condemnation from church officials, who described the action as unjust and disruptive to their congregation, now left without a place of worship.
During the discussion, Ogene reiterated opposition to the demolition, which led to extended reconciliatory talks.
Okufolati noted that while the church seeks peaceful resolution, the council claimed ownership of the land and proceeded with demolition despite ongoing court proceedings and injunctions.
The police have directed all parties to collaborate on resolving the issue.
Yusuf promised the council will make restitution for the demolition and also consult with relevant authorities and provide an update within the week.
A representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Christian Nwogu, said the incident goes beyond Deeper Life Bible Church, stressing the commitment of CAN to safeguarding the rights of churches and ensuring the protection of religious freedom.
