Lack of action in Nigeria pushes Lawal out

-

Nigerian tennis player, Shehu Lawal, has intensified preparations to seek ‘greener pastures’ outside the country.

The Davis Cup player, who is not hiding his desire to go to France in a bid to seek more tennis action and make more money, is not giving up on his dream move.

Lawal bemoaned the absence of tournaments in the country, stating that it is the reason Nigerian players perform woefully during international competitions.

“Which other tournament have we played after the Dala Championship last year? There is no tennis in this country, believe me.

“It is quite saddening that this is where we have found ourselves in our chosen sport. No competitions for us; how do we have ATP points for international ranking?

“Like I told you early this year, I will be travelling to France and I have not changed my mind about that. Preparations are in place, so I should be out by the end of next month,” he explained.

The winner of the 2012 men’s doubles of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Tennis Open added: “I have secured a place in France where I will get to play tennis often and make more money for my young family.

“I want to get actions. I want to play as many matches as possible, and since I cannot get that opportunity here, it is better to leave and go where I can display my talents.”
