A group in the Kwara North Senatorial District, Kwara North Development Council, (KWANDCO) has advocated zoning of the governorship seat of the state in 2027 to the district.

The group canvassed for the zoning while reacting to the reported position of the incumbent senator from the south district of the state, Lola Ashiru, on the zoning.

Ashiru, who is the Deputy Senate Leader, had been reported to have said in an interview that zoning may not be the only yardstick for considering candidates for the 2027 governorship election in the state.

KWANDCO, in a statement, said though Ashiru is entitled to his own opinion, it was most appropriate that zoning should be considered and the north senatorial district be considered for the zoning.

The statement signed by a spokesman of the council, Ahmad Muhammad, said it was in the interest of equity and fearness that the district which last produced governor since the aborted third republic between 1992-1993 should produce the next governor.

The incumbent governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who assumed office after a governor from the south district had ruled for eight years is from the central senatorial district, the zone that has, as of 2023, produced governors that have ruled the state for 16 years.

He became a governor in 2019 as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when he defeated his major opponent, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate who is also from the central senatorial district.

The Kwara governor won his second term of office in 2023 when the PDP presented a candidate from the north district.

KWANDCO urged leaders and elders of all parties in both central and suth districts and the entire state to consider the north district for the governorship slot in 2027.

The council said this would encourage harmonious and peaceful coexistence among people of the state in the three senatorial districts.

The group said though it would not like to overheat the polity with its advivate for zoning the goernorship seat to the north, it would not hesitate counter anybody opposing the idea of the zoning

“While KWANDCO will for the meantime suspend making further public comments on the 2027 agenda in order not to overheat the system and cause unnecessary distraction to the current administration under the leadership of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the group is however fully committed to actualising the Kwara North 2027 agenda and will not hesitate to face anyone or group that makes any attempts to hinder the success of the project,” it stated.
