Kenyan President William Ruto has humorously raised the alarm over the increasing number of Kenyan women marrying Nigerian men, including his own daughter, proving Naija guys to be hot cakes while materialistic celeb Nigerian women bash them as unromantic egocentrics.
Arty types Tiwa Savage and Kate Henshaw recently took such digs at Nigerian men; who, in turn, complain that Nigerian ladies are generally rude, arrogant, way too materialistic and, to cap it all, are ingrates.
Despite the negative portrayal of Nigerian men by the likes of Tiwa and Kate, the folks have historically been snapped up by ladies from Ghana on the West African coast, and are now joined by their counterparts from Kenya, on the East coast.
Outside the continent, the daughter of Kamala Harris’ sister in the United States is married to a Nigerian who works at Google, and the daughter of Donald Trump is married to a Lebanese-Nigerian born and raised in Lagos, just to name two other examples.
In a reverse situation, British politician Kemi Badenoch of Nigerian heritage is married to a (White) Scot, and the daughter of the late Dora Akunyili also has a White husband.
In another reverse, Juma Jux this year travelled all the way from Tanzania to Nigeria to export social media influencer Priscilla Ojo – daughter of Nollywoodian Iyabo Ojo – as his wife, done with seven wedding celebrations in different places, which the singer said was to “honour every significant location that shaped our love story.”
Back to Kenya, the northern neighbour of Tanzania, Ruto at a recent wedding ceremony highlighted “a noticeable trend of Kenyan women” choosing Nigerian husbands, and jokingly questioned why Kenyan men seem to be missing out.
“My daughter is married to a Nigerian, and this one is now again married to a Nigerian. And our guys are around; I don’t know, are you slow? I don’t know,” Ruto said.
He joked that if the trend continues, Kenya may experience a “brain drain” as more women leave the country through marriage.
“We need to balance this scale because at this rate, we are going to have a brain drain.”
Ruto’s daughter June married Alexander Ezenegu, a Nigerian doctor, on 27 May 2021.
Despite expressing support for his daughter’s choice of husband, he admitted it was difficult at first to come to terms with her decision to marry a Nigerian.
“It is both an exciting and anxious moment. It is not easy as a parent to give away your daughter. It is much more difficult if you are giving away your daughter to Nigerians. It is much more difficult when you are giving your daughter to Igbos.”
