Kebbi govt confirms death of Emir of Zuru, Sani Sami

Kebbi State government has confirmed the passing of the Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd).

The late monarch, who is also known as Gomo II, passed away in a London hospital after a brief illness at the age of 81.

Announcing the demise of the royal father on Sunday, his family referred to him as a leader who balanced a fine military career and decades of devoted service to his people.

Also confirming his death, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, expressed deep sorrow over the Emir’s passing.

The Kebbie govt in the statement also extended sympathies to his immediate family, the Zuru Emirate Council, the people of Zuru, and the entire state.

The statement read, “The government prays to Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”

Sami, who was born on October 24, 1943, enlisted in the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962.

He received his training at the Mons Officer Cadet School Aldershot, United Kingdom and got commissioned on July 15, 1963.

He served in various sensitive appointments, including Commander Brigade of Guards under Murtala Mohammed’s administration as well as military governor of Bauchi State in December 1983.

After retiring from the army, he returned to his home town and became the Emir of Zuru.

He was regarded as a hardworking, simple and disciplined individual who was devoted to the traditions and cultural heritage of the emirate.
