Afrobeats singer and songwriter Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa, popularly known as Joeboy, has said it is now more difficult for up-and-coming artists to attain stardom in the Nigerian music industry than it was a few years ago.

The ‘Adenuga’ crooner made this known recently while speaking in a candid interview with Jay On-Air.

He explained that breaking into the mainstream music industry now requires the artist to be social media-savvy and act as a sort of influencer.

“I genuinely feel for artists that are trying to go mainstream right now because, unlike before, it takes a lot more and it now depends on your personality and all of that. Because right now you have to be in everybody’s faces,” Joeboy said.

He further noted that this was not the trend in previous years, adding that, back then, good music and branding were all that mattered.

”Back then, if you had great music, a great brand behind you, and great marketing, the chances of you popping up were much higher. But now, it demands way more than that.” the 28-year-old singer added.

Joeboy went on to advise up-and-coming artists to take advantage of social media platforms like TikTok to promote their music.
