Werder Bremen right back, Isaac Schmidt, has justified his decision to play his international football for Switzerland instead of Nigeria.
Being a son of a Swiss-German father and a Nigerian mother, he is eligible to play for the Super Eagles.
However, he played his cap-tying game for Switzerland in a World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on September 8, 2025.
Speaking during a recent interview with German news outlet, Bild, Schmidt said he is more connected to Switzerland than Nigeria.

The defender, who is on loan at Leeds United from the Bundesliga club also said Nigeria never contacted him.
Speaking during the chat, he said, “I have a strong connection to the country and have been there a few times.
“But I’ve never had any contact with the Nigerian national team.”
While discussing the meaning of his name, he clarifies, “Osas is just an abbreviation for me. My full middle name is Osayimori.”
Schmidt was injured in training and played no part in Switzerland’s 2–0 victory over Sweden on Friday.
