I’m ready for war, Dele Farotimi vows to clear name after defamation charges

By Jeffrey Agbo

Lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has declared his readiness to fight and clear his name following his arraignment in Ekiti on charges of defamation.

Mr. Farotimi was arrested on December 3, 2024, at his Lagos office by officers of the Ekiti Police Command. He was transported to Ekiti to face charges of defaming senior lawyer Afe Babalola in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

After spending weeks in detention, Mr. Farotimi was released from an Ekiti correctional facility on December 24, having met the stringent bail conditions set by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court. The conditions included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the surrender of his passport, and a prohibition on granting media interviews.

Announcing his release, activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore shared on social media, “I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti State and is now returning home to Lagos.”

During a live session on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Mr. Farotimi expressed gratitude for the support he received and vowed to continue his fight.

“I am strong enough to rumble against principalities and powers, but I am human enough to retain the capacity to shed tears of joy in appreciation of the grace of God, expressed in the concerted efforts of fellow victims,” he said.

Declaring his resolve, he added, “My battle axes are newly sharpened, my guns primed, I am ready to war. My resolve was never tested but I was waiting for next round of the fight to commence. I knew that the first round had been lost by those responsible for my imprisonment.”
