Ike Ugbo dumps Super Eagles, opts to play for Canada

Ike Ugbo had earlier hinted at representing the Super Eagles, since his parents are citizens of Nigeria, but has now opted for play for Canada

RC Genk striker Ike Ugbo has decided against playing for the Super Eagles of Nigeria and opted to play for The Canucks of Canada instead.

The player who is eligible to play for the Super Eagles because his parents are from Nigeria is a teammate of Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu.  

According to Complete Sports, Ike Ugbo, who had earlier decided to play for Nigeria suddenly made a surprise u-turn to don the colors of Canada Men’s National Team.

He is now expected to join Canada this coming week in Edmonton, Alberta for the Concacaf final round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

While being unveiled on Thursday evening, the Canadian soccer coach, John Herdman, described his joining the Canada Men’s National Team as good news because he is a top player.

He also said Canada stands to benefit a lot from it because he is a young player with years ahead of him, he also added that he cannot wait to see him don the red jersey of Canada. 

“This is great news for Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Program and the country as he’s another young, top-level player with his best football years ahead of him.

“He’s chosen to be part of this exciting journey starting with FIFA World Cup qualifiers. We are looking forward to finally seeing him in that Canada red jersey.” Herman said.

Ike Ugbo, who plays in the Belgian top-division, represented England at the youth international level but has now committed his future to the North American nation.
